Where to Stay in Antalya: Best Areas for First-Time Visitors

Where to Stay in Antalya: Best Areas for First-Time Visitors

Deciding where to stay in Antalya can make a major difference to your trip because Antalya is spread across a large coastal area. The best neighbourhood for you depends on whether you want historic sightseeing, easy beach access, nightlife, family-friendly resorts or an all-inclusive holiday.

For most first-time visitors interested in sightseeing, Kaleiçi and the surrounding city centre provide the most convenient base. Beach-focused travellers may prefer Konyaaltı, while Lara works well for visitors who want sandy beaches and easier access to the eastern side of the city. Travellers seeking a full resort experience can look farther east towards Kundu.

This guide compares Antalya’s main accommodation areas so you can choose the right base for your trip.

If this is your first visit, read our Antalya Travel Guide first for an overview of the city’s attractions, beaches, transport and day trips.

Quick Guide: Best Areas to Stay in Antalya

If you want a quick answer, these are the main areas to consider:

Kaleiçi: Best for first-time visitors, history and atmosphere.

City Centre: Best for convenience, shopping and transport.

Konyaaltı: Best for combining the beach with city sightseeing.

Lara: Best for sandy beaches, couples and a more modern coastal stay.

Kundu: Best for all-inclusive resorts and families.

Each area offers a very different Antalya experience, so location matters more here than it does in many compact European cities.

1. Kaleiçi – Best for First-Time Visitors

For many first-time visitors, Kaleiçi is the best place to stay in Antalya.

This is Antalya’s historic Old Town, filled with narrow streets, traditional architecture, restaurants, cafés and boutique hotels.

Staying here puts you within walking distance of several of the city’s most important attractions.

Hadrian’s Gate, Hıdırlık Tower, Karaalioğlu Park and Antalya’s historic harbour are all nearby.

Rather than commuting into the historic centre every morning, you can simply step outside your hotel and begin exploring.

Why Stay in Kaleiçi?

Atmosphere is Kaleiçi’s greatest advantage.

Many accommodation options occupy restored historic buildings rather than conventional modern hotel towers.

Evenings can also be enjoyable because restaurants, bars and cafés remain active after daytime visitors leave.

Couples and travellers interested in history are particularly likely to enjoy staying here.

Things to Consider

Kaleiçi is not the best choice for everyone.

Historic streets can be narrow and uneven, and vehicle access is more restricted than in modern parts of Antalya.

Some properties are also located near restaurants and nightlife, which can mean more evening noise.

Travellers primarily visiting Antalya for a conventional beach holiday may prefer Konyaaltı or Lara.

Best For

First-time visitors, couples, history lovers, short city breaks and travellers who want to walk to central attractions.

2. Antalya City Centre – Best for Convenience

Travellers who want central access without necessarily staying inside Kaleiçi should consider the wider city centre.

Areas immediately around the Old Town provide easier access to modern streets, shopping, public transport and a wider selection of hotels.

You remain close enough to walk or take a short tram journey to historic attractions while enjoying a more conventional urban environment.

This can be particularly useful if you are travelling with larger luggage or prefer modern hotels.

Why Stay in the City Centre?

Convenience is the main advantage.

You can reach Kaleiçi easily while remaining well connected to other parts of Antalya.

Restaurants, shops, pharmacies and everyday services are readily available.

Public transport also makes it easier to travel towards beaches and other districts.

Things to Consider

The city centre does not provide the same historic atmosphere as staying directly within Kaleiçi.

You may also be farther from the beach depending on your exact hotel location.

Best For

Sightseeing, transport connections, shopping, shorter visits and travellers who prefer modern hotels.

3. Konyaaltı – Best for Beach + City

Konyaaltı is one of the strongest choices for travellers who want to combine Antalya sightseeing with regular beach time.

Konyaaltı Beach stretches along the western side of Antalya, backed by dramatic mountain scenery.

The waterfront has promenades, cafés, restaurants and recreational spaces.

Unlike staying at a remote resort, Konyaaltı still allows relatively easy access to central Antalya.

Why Stay in Konyaaltı?

The beach is the obvious attraction.

You can start or finish the day beside the Mediterranean without travelling across the city every time you want to swim.

The surrounding district also feels more like a normal urban neighbourhood than an isolated resort complex.

Families may appreciate the promenade and open spaces, while couples can enjoy evening walks along the coast.

Getting to Central Antalya

Public transport connects Konyaaltı with the central city.

The exact journey time depends on where along the long beachfront you stay, so check your hotel’s location rather than assuming every Konyaaltı property is equally convenient.

Under the current Antalyakart fare structure, a standard full-fare public transport journey costs approximately 42 TL.

Things to Consider

Konyaaltı is primarily a pebble beach rather than a classic fine-sand beach.

If soft sand is your priority, Lara may suit you better.

You will also need transport for repeated visits to Kaleiçi and attractions on the eastern side of Antalya.

Best For

Beach lovers, families, couples, longer stays and travellers wanting both city sightseeing and the Mediterranean.

4. Lara – Best for Sandy Beaches

Lara lies east of central Antalya and is one of the city’s best-known beach areas.

The broader Lara district contains residential neighbourhoods, restaurants, hotels and access to the coast.

Farther east, the accommodation becomes increasingly resort-oriented.

Lara Beach is known for its broad sandy coastline, making it noticeably different from Konyaaltı’s pebble beach.

Why Stay in Lara?

Lara works particularly well for travellers prioritising beach time.

The district also provides relatively convenient access to Lower Düden Waterfall, where the river plunges dramatically into the Mediterranean.

Restaurants and cafés are plentiful in many parts of Lara, so you do not necessarily need an all-inclusive hotel.

Lara vs Konyaaltı

Choosing between Lara and Konyaaltı is one of the most common Antalya accommodation decisions.

Choose Konyaaltı if you want dramatic mountain views, a long promenade and convenient access to western Antalya.

Choose Lara if you prefer sandy beaches and easier access to Lower Düden and Antalya’s eastern side.

Neither is automatically better. They simply provide different experiences.

Things to Consider

Lara covers a substantial area.

A hotel advertised as being in Lara may not necessarily sit directly beside the public beach.

Always check the exact map location before booking.

Best For

Couples, beach holidays, sandy beaches and travellers who want a modern coastal neighbourhood.

5. Kundu – Best for All-Inclusive Resorts

Travel farther east from Lara and the character of Antalya changes again.

Kundu is associated with Antalya’s large resort hotels and all-inclusive properties.

This is where travellers can find expansive hotel complexes offering swimming pools, private or managed beach areas, restaurants, entertainment and family facilities.

Why Stay in Kundu?

Kundu is designed for travellers who want the hotel itself to form a major part of the holiday.

Families may particularly appreciate resorts with children’s pools, activities and entertainment.

Couples can choose more upscale properties focused on relaxation and spa facilities.

All-inclusive packages can also make budgeting easier because many meals and drinks are included in the accommodation cost.

Things to Consider

Kundu is less suitable if your priority is exploring Kaleiçi every day.

You are staying in a resort zone rather than Antalya’s historic centre.

Travelling repeatedly between Kundu and Old Town attractions takes additional time.

For a short first visit focused heavily on history and sightseeing, Kaleiçi is usually more convenient.

Best For

Families, resort holidays, all-inclusive stays and travellers planning substantial time at their hotel.

Kaleiçi vs Konyaaltı: Which Is Better?

For many independent travellers, the most important decision is between Kaleiçi and Konyaaltı.

Choose Kaleiçi if:

You are visiting Antalya for the first time.

Historic sightseeing is your main priority.

You want restaurants and cafés within walking distance.

You enjoy atmospheric boutique hotels.

You are staying only 2 or 3 nights.

Choose Konyaaltı if:

Beach time is a major part of your trip.

You want a modern waterfront neighbourhood.

You are staying longer.

You prefer promenades and mountain views.

You do not mind using public transport to reach the Old Town.

For a 3-day first visit, I would generally favour Kaleiçi or the nearby centre because it reduces travel time between the city’s main historic attractions.

Lara vs Kundu: Which Is Better?

Lara and Kundu are also sometimes treated as if they are the same area, but travellers should distinguish between them.

Lara includes a broader urban coastal district where you can stay independently, visit restaurants and experience more everyday city life.

Kundu is farther east and much more strongly associated with large resort complexes.

Choose Lara if you want flexibility.

Choose Kundu if the resort itself is central to your holiday.

Best Area for Couples

Kaleiçi is an excellent choice for couples who enjoy historic streets, boutique accommodation and evening restaurants.

The old harbour and surrounding viewpoints are particularly attractive around sunset.

Lara is another strong option for couples who prioritise beaches and modern hotels.

For a luxury resort stay, Kundu offers many upscale properties with spa facilities and extensive hotel grounds.

Best Area for Families

Families have several good choices depending on their travel style.

Konyaaltı works well for families wanting an independent holiday with beach access and city sightseeing.

Lara provides sandy beaches and plenty of hotels.

Kundu is the strongest option for families specifically looking for large all-inclusive resorts with children’s facilities and organised entertainment.

Kaleiçi can still work for families, but narrow streets, nightlife and historic buildings may be less convenient for families using large pushchairs or wanting extensive hotel facilities.

Best Area for Nightlife

Kaleiçi has one of the best concentrations of bars, restaurants and evening activity for visitors who want nightlife close to their accommodation.

The historic surroundings also give evenings here more atmosphere than in a conventional entertainment district.

Parts of Lara also have plenty of restaurants and bars.

Large Kundu resorts generally provide their own entertainment rather than relying on a neighbourhood nightlife scene.

Best Area Without a Car

You do not need a rental car to stay in Antalya.

For visitors without a car, Kaleiçi and central Antalya are particularly convenient because so many attractions can be reached on foot.

Konyaaltı and Lara are also workable thanks to Antalya’s public transport network.

The standard Antalyakart fare is currently approximately 42 TL, with eligible transfers available under the system’s rules.

Paying directly by credit card currently costs more than using Antalyakart.

If you plan to use buses and trams regularly, getting an Antalyakart can therefore be worthwhile.

Best Area for a Short Antalya Trip

For a trip of only 2 or 3 days, choose Kaleiçi or somewhere immediately outside it.

You will waste less time travelling to central sights.

Hadrian’s Gate, the Old Town, harbour, Karaalioğlu Park and several historic attractions can all be combined on foot.

You can then use public transport or a taxi for a beach, waterfall or archaeological excursion.

For a longer holiday of five days or more, staying near the beach becomes more attractive because you have enough time to alternate sightseeing with relaxation.

Best Area for a Beach Holiday

For an independent beach holiday, compare Konyaaltı and Lara.

Konyaaltı gives you the famous mountain backdrop and pebble shoreline.

Lara provides sandy beach areas and easier access to Antalya’s eastern resort corridor.

For a hotel-centred all-inclusive beach holiday, choose Kundu.

The right choice therefore depends on whether you want to explore Antalya independently or spend most of your holiday inside a resort.

Should You Stay in Antalya or a Nearby Resort Town?

Antalya Province is enormous, and accommodation marketed as an Antalya holiday may actually be far from Antalya city.

Places such as Belek, Kemer and Side offer excellent resort experiences, but they should not be treated as central Antalya neighbourhoods.

Stay in Antalya city if Kaleiçi, museums, city restaurants and urban sightseeing matter to you.

Choose a resort town if beaches, hotel facilities, golf or a quieter coastal holiday are the main purpose of your trip.

Trying to commute from a distant resort into Antalya every day can become tiring.

How Much Does Accommodation Cost in Antalya?

Hotel prices vary dramatically by season, neighbourhood and property type.

Kaleiçi has everything from relatively simple guesthouses to stylish boutique hotels.

Konyaaltı and Lara provide a mixture of apartments, mid-range hotels and more upscale properties.

Kundu contains many large luxury resorts where nightly prices may include meals and other facilities.

July and August can bring strong demand for coastal accommodation.

Prices can also vary around holidays and major events.

Rather than focusing only on the cheapest nightly rate, consider what you will spend on transport if your hotel is far from the attractions you intend to visit.

We will examine accommodation, food, transport and sightseeing expenses more closely in our upcoming Antalya Travel Budget guide.

Getting Around From Your Hotel

Antalya’s buses and tram services make it possible to stay outside the historic centre without relying entirely on taxis.

The standard Antalyakart full fare is currently around 42 TL per journey.

Credit-card payment is approximately 50 TL, while a single-use ticket costs approximately 46 TL.

Eligible Antalyakart transfers can be free under the current transfer rules.

Travellers staying in Kaleiçi may barely need public transport for central sightseeing.

Those staying in Konyaaltı, Lara or Kundu should factor transport time into their daily plans.

Where Should First-Time Visitors Stay in Antalya?

For a typical first trip combining history, food, sightseeing and some beach time, Kaleiçi is my practical starting point.

That is not because it is universally superior to Antalya’s other districts.

It simply puts first-time visitors close to the greatest concentration of historic sights and allows substantial sightseeing on foot.

If the beach is equally important as history, choose Konyaaltı.

If sandy beaches matter more, consider Lara.

And if you primarily want pools, restaurants, entertainment and an all-inclusive resort, look towards Kundu.

Final Thoughts on Where to Stay in Antalya

Choosing where to stay in Antalya becomes much easier once you decide what type of holiday you want.

Kaleiçi provides history and atmosphere.

Central Antalya offers convenience and transport.

Konyaaltı combines beach life with access to the city.

Lara offers sandy beaches and a modern coastal setting.

Kundu specialises in large resort holidays.

For most first-time sightseeing-focused travellers, staying in or close to Kaleiçi keeps Antalya’s historic attractions within easy reach.

Beach-focused travellers should compare Konyaaltı and Lara carefully before booking, while families wanting a self-contained holiday may prefer Kundu’s resort complexes.
