Planning 3 days in Orlando requires making choices. The city has far more attractions than you can realistically experience in one long weekend, especially when Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando each deserve several days on their own.
For a first visit, this itinerary gives you three different Orlando experiences: a classic Walt Disney World day, a full day at Universal Orlando’s newest major park, Epic Universe, and a more flexible third day combining Orlando beyond the theme parks with International Drive.
If Disney or Universal is the sole purpose of your trip, you can easily replace Day 3 with another theme-park day.
Before travelling, read our Orlando Travel Guide for an overview of the city’s attractions, transportation and practical planning.

3 Days in Orlando at a Glance
Day 1
Magic Kingdom – Classic Walt Disney World
Spend your first full day at Walt Disney World’s most iconic theme park.
Day 2
Universal Epic Universe
Dedicate an entire day to Universal Orlando’s newest major theme park and its five immersive worlds.
Day 3
Downtown Orlando – Lake Eola – International Drive
Slow the pace, explore Orlando beyond the resort gates and finish with entertainment and dining around International Drive.
This itinerary works particularly well for first-time visitors who want a sample of different sides of Orlando.
Before Starting Your Orlando Itinerary
Orlando is not a destination where you should improvise everything after arrival.
Theme-park tickets, hotel location and transportation deserve advance planning.
Book your hotel according to the attractions you intend to visit most.
Our guide to where to stay in Orlando compares the Disney area, Universal area, International Drive, Downtown Orlando and other useful bases.
Also download the official apps for the theme parks you plan to visit.
Operating hours, attraction availability and entertainment schedules can change, so check your exact dates shortly before travelling.
Day 1: Magic Kingdom
Begin your 3-day Orlando trip with the classic Walt Disney World experience.
Magic Kingdom is the park most strongly associated with Disney World, making it a logical choice if you only have time for one Disney park.
It contains Cinderella Castle, classic Disney attractions, newer rides and extensive entertainment.
Plan to spend the entire day here.
Morning: Arrive Before Opening
An early start is extremely valuable at Magic Kingdom.
Park hours change according to date, and some Disney Resort hotel guests receive Early Entry benefits.
Check Disney’s current calendar for your specific day rather than relying on a fixed opening time.
Arrive with a short list of attractions that matter most to you.
Popular choices include:
- TRON Lightcycle / Run
- Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
- Tiana’s Bayou Adventure
- Space Mountain
- Peter Pan’s Flight
- Haunted Mansion
- Pirates of the Caribbean
- Jungle Cruise
You will not necessarily complete everything without queues, so prioritise rather than rushing randomly across the park.
Explore Fantasyland and Tomorrowland
First-time visitors often want to experience Fantasyland because it contains many of Magic Kingdom’s most recognisable family attractions.
From there, continue towards Tomorrowland for rides such as Space Mountain and TRON Lightcycle / Run.
Do not spend the morning repeatedly crossing the park.
Group nearby attractions together whenever possible.
This reduces unnecessary walking during what will already be a very active day.
Lunch at Magic Kingdom
For a short 3-day trip, a quick-service lunch is often more practical than a lengthy table-service meal.
It allows you to rest without sacrificing a large portion of your park day.
If a particular restaurant is an important part of your Disney experience, however, check reservation requirements well before arriving.
Drink plenty of water, particularly during Florida’s warmer months.
Afternoon: Adventureland, Frontierland and Liberty Square
After lunch, move towards the western side of Magic Kingdom.
Possible attractions include:
- Pirates of the Caribbean
- Jungle Cruise
- Haunted Mansion
- Tiana’s Bayou Adventure
- Country Bear Musical Jamboree
The afternoon is also a good time to use indoor attractions as breaks from Florida’s heat or rain.
Summer conditions can be especially demanding, so avoid treating rest as wasted time.
Evening at Magic Kingdom
Stay into the evening if your energy allows.
Magic Kingdom takes on a different atmosphere after sunset when Cinderella Castle and the surrounding lands are illuminated.
Disney’s entertainment schedule changes, and special ticketed events can sometimes affect normal operating hours.
Check the calendar for your exact date before assuming the park will remain open late.
When nighttime entertainment is scheduled, allow enough time to choose a viewing area.
Magic Kingdom Parking
If you are driving, Disney currently charges $35 per day for standard parking for a car or motorcycle.
One Disney theme-park parking payment is valid at all four Walt Disney World theme parks during the same day.
Registered guests of Disney Resort hotels currently receive standard theme-park parking as part of their stay.
If you are staying at a Disney Resort hotel, using Disney transportation may be more convenient than driving.
Day 2: Universal Epic Universe
Your second day is dedicated to Universal Epic Universe.
Epic Universe is Universal Orlando’s newest major theme park and contains five immersive worlds.
These are:
- Celestial Park
- SUPER NINTENDO WORLD
- Dark Universe
- How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk
- The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic
Give Epic Universe a full day rather than trying to combine it with Universal Studios Florida or Islands of Adventure.
Morning: Enter Through Celestial Park
Celestial Park acts as the central hub connecting Epic Universe’s themed worlds.
Take some time to appreciate the landscaping and architecture, but do not spend your entire morning here if major attractions elsewhere are priorities.
Decide which world matters most to you before arriving.
Families with Nintendo fans may prioritise SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, while Harry Potter fans will naturally want to spend significant time in Ministry of Magic.
Thrill-ride enthusiasts should review the park’s attraction lineup before the trip.
SUPER NINTENDO WORLD
SUPER NINTENDO WORLD is likely to be one of the highest-priority areas for many visitors.
The environment is designed around Nintendo characters and games and includes attractions, interactive elements, shops and themed dining.
Because demand can vary considerably, check current wait times through Universal’s official app once you enter the park.
Avoid assuming that the attraction with the longest queue now will necessarily have the longest queue later.
How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk
Families should leave enough time for Isle of Berk.
The area offers a visually different atmosphere and attractions inspired by the How to Train Your Dragon films.
It can provide a useful change of pace after the intense visual environment of SUPER NINTENDO WORLD.
Lunch at Epic Universe
Eat inside whichever world fits your schedule rather than crossing the entire park solely for lunch.
Themed food is part of the Epic Universe experience, so look at menus before your trip if dining matters to you.
As at Disney, advance planning helps prevent spending valuable park time deciding where everyone wants to eat.
Afternoon: Dark Universe
Dark Universe offers a darker atmosphere inspired by Universal’s classic monsters.
It provides a strong contrast with the bright environments elsewhere in Epic Universe.
Visitors travelling with young children should check individual attraction descriptions and intensity before joining queues.
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic
Harry Potter fans should reserve substantial time for Ministry of Magic.
Rather than treating the land as simply a place to ride one attraction, allow time to explore its details, shops and overall environment.
This is one reason we recommend dedicating the entire second day to Epic Universe.
Trying to visit another Universal park on the same day would force you to rush through a park designed for extended exploration.
Evening at Epic Universe
Return to Celestial Park as daylight fades.
The central area is designed to become particularly atmospheric in the evening, making it an excellent place to finish your Universal day.
Check Universal’s official operating calendar before visiting because park hours vary according to date.
Alternative Day 2: Universal Studios + Islands of Adventure
Some visitors may prefer the established Universal parks over Epic Universe.
If Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley, Hogsmeade, Jurassic Park, Marvel attractions or the major roller coasters at Islands of Adventure are higher priorities, replace Epic Universe with Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure.
A park-to-park ticket is required for certain experiences connecting the two parks, including Hogwarts Express.
Do not buy the more expensive ticket option unless you intend to use its benefits.
Day 3: Downtown Orlando and International Drive
After two intensive theme-park days, use Day 3 to slow down and see another side of Orlando.
Start in Downtown Orlando before moving towards International Drive later in the day.
This also makes the itinerary more flexible for travellers who do not want three consecutive theme-park days.
Morning: Lake Eola Park
Begin at Lake Eola Park in Downtown Orlando.
The lake sits beneath Orlando’s downtown skyline and has a paved walking path, green spaces and public art.
The City of Orlando currently lists Lake Eola Park as open daily from 6:00 a.m. until 11:59 p.m.
Walking around the park itself is free.
This is an excellent place for a relaxed morning after two long days of theme-park queues and rides.
Walk Around Downtown Orlando
After Lake Eola, explore some of the surrounding downtown streets.
Stop for coffee or brunch and enjoy a slower morning.
Downtown Orlando feels noticeably different from the resort areas and provides useful context for visitors who otherwise see only theme parks.
Depending on your interests and schedule, you can also investigate local museums, cultural venues or events.
Optional Alternative: Winter Park
If you prefer leafy streets and cafés to Downtown Orlando, spend the morning in Winter Park instead.
Walk around Park Avenue, browse the shops and stop for lunch.
Winter Park works especially well for couples or repeat visitors seeking something removed from the theme-park atmosphere.
Do not attempt to squeeze Downtown Orlando and Winter Park into the morning unless you genuinely have enough time.
Choose one and enjoy it properly.
Afternoon: International Drive
After lunch, head towards International Drive, commonly called I-Drive.
This long tourism corridor contains hotels, restaurants, shops and entertainment attractions.
ICON Park is one of its best-known complexes.
Your afternoon can be as active or relaxed as you want.
Rather than following a rigid schedule, choose one or two attractions that appeal to your group.
Evening on International Drive
Finish your 3 days in Orlando with dinner around International Drive.
The enormous selection of restaurants makes it easy to choose according to your budget and preferences.
After two days of theme-park food and tightly scheduled attractions, a relaxed dinner can be a welcome ending to the trip.
Alternative Day 3: Another Theme Park
Some travellers will understandably prefer another theme-park day.
If so, replace Downtown and International Drive with one of these:
EPCOT
Choose EPCOT if you want Disney attractions combined with World Showcase, restaurants and international pavilions.
Disney’s Hollywood Studios
Choose Hollywood Studios if Star Wars and movie-based attractions are major priorities.
Disney’s Animal Kingdom
Choose Animal Kingdom for animal experiences, immersive landscapes and major themed attractions.
Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure
Choose these if Day 2 was spent at Epic Universe and you want a second Universal day.
SeaWorld Orlando
SeaWorld combines marine-life experiences with several thrill rides and roller coasters.
Your ideal third day depends more on personal interests than on any universal “must-see” list.
Can You Visit Disney and Universal in the Same Day?
Technically, yes.
For most first-time visitors with only 3 days, it is not a good use of time.
Disney and Universal are separate resorts.
Moving between them means leaving one resort, arranging transportation, passing through security again and entering another park.
You also need appropriate admission for both destinations.
Dedicate individual days to each resort instead.
Getting Around During This Itinerary
Transportation depends on your hotel.
A rental car provides flexibility, particularly for Day 3.
Rideshare services can be convenient for travellers who do not want to drive.
Visitors staying at Disney or Universal hotels should use complimentary resort transportation where it makes sense.
Orlando’s distances can be deceptive, especially during periods of heavy traffic.
Always allow extra travel time rather than scheduling attractions back-to-back across different parts of the city.
How Much Will 3 Days in Orlando Cost?
Your largest expenses will probably be:
- Accommodation
- Theme-park tickets
- Food
- Transportation
- Parking if driving
- Optional queue-management products
- Souvenirs
Ticket prices vary according to date and product, making a single fixed 3-day figure misleading.
Accommodation costs also change dramatically between simple off-site hotels and premium theme-park resorts.
We will break this down properly in our upcoming Orlando Travel Budget guide.
What to Pack for 3 Days in Orlando
Comfortable walking shoes are essential.
Also consider:
- Sunscreen
- Sunglasses
- Refillable water bottle
- Lightweight rain protection
- Portable phone charger
- Small day bag
- Hat
- Comfortable breathable clothing
During summer, Florida’s combination of heat, humidity and thunderstorms makes weather preparation especially important.
Keep checking the forecast throughout your trip.
Should You Extend Your Orlando Trip?
If you have the time, absolutely.
3 days provides only an introduction.
Five days gives you enough time to experience several major parks without making every day exhausting.
A full week allows you to mix Disney, Universal and other Orlando attractions with slower pool or rest periods.
Orlando rewards additional time more than many conventional city-break destinations because its individual theme parks can each consume an entire day.
Final Thoughts
Spending 3 days in Orlando forces you to prioritise, but it is still enough time for an exciting first visit.
Use Day 1 for the classic Walt Disney World experience at Magic Kingdom. Dedicate Day 2 to Universal Epic Universe and its five immersive worlds. Then use Day 3 to slow down around Downtown Orlando, Lake Eola and International Drive—or substitute another full theme-park day if rides and attractions are your highest priority.
Most importantly, resist the temptation to see everything.
Orlando is too large and its theme parks are too substantial for that approach.
3 carefully planned days will give you a far better experience than 3 days spent constantly rushing between distant attractions.
